Single-phase matrix converter for active power filter applications

Abstract
This paper presents an AC/AC active power filter based on a single-phase matrix converter (SPMC). The use of a matrix topology allows to eliminate the reactive components normally used for temporary energy storage, reducing the size of the power converter and improving its reliability. The filter operates in series with the load through a step-down transformer, also allowing for a limited regulation of the fundamental voltage (boost/reduction). Several control methods are evaluated; in particular, a novel zero voltage compensation technique is introduced in order to reduce distortion around the input voltage zero crossing. Simulations and experiments are used to validate the considered control methods, and confirm the feasibility of the proposed solution.
